Notes from Seth Godin’s Poke the Box

The job isn’t to catch up to the status quo; the job is to invent the status quo.

Take the initiative. GO. Do it.

7 Imperatives

  1. Be Aware — aware of market, opportunities, of who you are
  2. Be Educated — understand what’s around you
  3. Be Connected — be trusted as you engage
  4. Be Consistent — system knows what to expect
  5. Build an asset — have something to sell
  6. Be Productive — can be well-priced
  7. HAVE THE GUTS AND THE HEART AND THE PASSION TO SHIP

Human nature is to need a map. Draw one, people will follow.

Start Stuff.

Ownership comes from understanding and from having the power to make things happen. No one has influence, control, or confidence in his work until he understands how to initiate change and predict how the box will respond.

Kinds of capital

  • Financial
  • Network
  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Prestige
  • Instigation

Make your realistic and attainable schedule and stick to it. Don’t allow setbacks or blocks or anxiety to push you away. Do not nap.

Poke smartly with tact.

Excellence is taking the initiative to do work you decide is worth doing.

What makes our work and our life interesting is discovery, surprise and the risk of exploration.

If you see something, say something.

Boundary is in the head, not in the system.

Something new is often the right path when the world is complicated.

Learn from failures.

Not starting is far, far worse than being wrong.

“Success-only” policy guarantee there will be no successes.
